Reimagining What’s Possible

Hello SVP Community,

Good morning from here in Seattle. How are you holding up?

It’s been over nine months of this new pandemic world and while the recent news of a vaccine is certainly heartening, it’s clear we are not going back to gatherings, conferences, working together in person and the like any time soon. Our world – and our work – has changed.

One year ago, I shared that 2020 would be about coming home to the values of innovation and collaboration that have guided Social Venture Partners for the last 20 years – and that SVP International as the network hub – would step up our leadership to ensure that the work and values of SVP have broad resonance for these times. We knew we would need to ground our strategies in a renewed commitment to our founding values:

Ultimately, we knew that 2020 would mean committing to the tangible work of change.

I’m proud to say that, thanks to the strength of our global network, that is exactly what we’ve done.

We hope you are proud of the work we have done together. If you haven’t already, please consider including SVPI in your year end giving. If you’re giving via a DAF, email info@svpi.org for instructions.

In the face of the challenges of 2020 we asked: What’s possible now that wasn’t possible before? Here are a few highlights of how we answered that together:

  • We catalyzed resources: We launched a new initiative – Reimagine Giving – to unify our collective work. Together with over one hundred members of our network, and the partnership of SVP Affiliates, we kicked-off the inaugural Reimagine Fund, awarding $70,000 to seven Black, Indigenous, and People of Color led systemic change efforts.
  • We sparked new conversations on systems change: As part of Reimagine Giving, we collaborated with Race Forward to launch a new virtual conversation series to inspire and engage Partners and philanthropists who are not yet in our network. SVPI Board members hosted virtual “Dine Arounds” to connect Partners across cities in conversations about the historic and current inequities in the flow of philanthropic capital and our opportunity to innovate and change that dynamic.
  • We grew our network: SVP Philadelphia – our network’s newest affiliate – officially launched and hit the ground running, making three grants to Black led organizations in their first year while piloting place-based, community-centered grantmaking processes.
  • We connected across geographies and communities: A panel of Partners from around the globe shared stories at the SVP India virtual summit and many more joined together to learn with and from leaders in India. As engagements led by local affiliates went virtual, we saw Partners and staff connecting across cities in more ways than ever before.
  • We collaborated and learned together: As part of our collaboration with Philanthropy Together, several SVP Affiliates participated in a racial equity learning cohort alongside other sector leaders and received mini grants to dig in deeper in 2021.
  • We brought SVP’s values of engaged philanthropy to the sector: We grew the presence and impact of the SVP brand through public thought leadership, virtual dialogues, and articles to help donors become systems change advocates.

As we look ahead to 2021, we have an opportunity to accelerate this work in even deeper coordination with our partners, affiliates, and strategic allies. To do so, we will need to harness the power of our global network, roll up our sleeves, and demonstrate our commitment to long term systems change.

So, how can you help us build on these accomplishments?

  1. The first, most critical way to support our evolution is by joining, renewing your local partnership, or making an extra contribution to your SVP affiliate. If you need help with making a year end gift to your local affiliate, reply to this email and we’ll make sure you get connected.
  2. The second way you can launch us into 2021 is with an end-of-year gift to Social Venture Partners International. By investing in SVPI, you are enabling our work to connect donors and social change makers, helping us catalyze more resources to grassroots, systems change efforts around the globe through Reimagine Giving, and directly resourcing our ability to carry out an ambitious agenda for 2021.

Thank you for all you do and for being part of the SVP community. I’m grateful for your consideration and support, and wish you my very best as we transition into the New Year.

Onward,

Sudha Nandagopal
CEO
